School & Youth Programs
Wind whipping the hair underneath your helmet, roaring through side streets on the way to your friend’s house, not a care in the world.
Who remembers those days? A bike isn’t just about being able to get somewhere a little quicker than walking, it's about freedom, responsibility and a sense of autonomy in the world, especially for young people. Fleurieu Bike offers a variety of tailored programs designed to empower, educate and inspire young people across the Fleurieu Peninsula and its surrounding regions.
Centred around bike mechanics, these programs teach hands-on skills, confidence and a profound sense of pride in one’s work. At its core the bicycle is a relatively simple machine: pedals move chain, chain moves wheels, wheels move bike (with some obvious exceptions and elaborations). It is that exact simplicity that allows for the broader learning to take place.
Courses cover:
● Workshop environments and etiquette
● Safety and tool uses
● Bike safety checks
● Tyre and tube replacement
● Brakes adjustment and servicing
● Gear adjustment and drivetrain care
● Cleaning and preventative maintenance
● Service forms and workshop documentation
This list of concrete, mechanical skills are in and of themselves useful but it is what they facilitate that is the greatest benefit of these programs. Young people learn skills like problem solving and critical thinking, they learn to work as part of a team and communicate.
They are encouraged to reflect on their growth, both in the practice of bike mechanics but also the learning experience as a whole; all under the guidance of a skilled and empathetic mentor.
The programs create a welcoming and inclusive environment where young people can learn practical skills in a space that promotes collaboration, sustainability and an active lifestyle. Fleurieu Bike is centred around community partnership and engagement, creating a foundation that supports the region.
